Q: How much sailing experience do we need?

A: Obviously the more the better. I suppose ideally you would have done some theory classes and are looking for practical experience in a safe and exciting environment before deciding to go for a bareback or flotilla charter or buy your own boat. If you have little or no experience you would be wise at least to read one of the books on becoming a competent crew so you would be able to find your way round the boat, know the terminology, and understand the fundamentals of sailing etc.

Q: What about food?

A: You will have to pay for your own food and drink. Generally people eat ashore in the evenings, it contributes to the local economy, but you are welcome to cook and eat aboard if you wish. Nanaia has a large fridge. Capn Dex fancies himself as a top chef and will cook for whoever is on board one night a week.

Q: Will we receive any training?

A: You will receive safety and sailing training and be given relevant information sheets before departure and at appropriate times when at sea.

Q: Do we need to bring life jackets?

A: There are sufficient life jackets on board but you are welcome to bring your own if you have one.

Q: Do I need insurance?

A: You need travel and personal insurance like any other holiday abroad. The boat is like a car. It has comprehensive and third party insurance in the event of an accident. Capn Dex accepts no liability for any items lost or stolen, or damages due to normal circumstances aboard a 42 foot sailing yacht.

Q: What shoes should we bring?

A: During calm weather we try not to wear any shoes on board. However when coming in to port or in choppy seas and whenever Capn Dex says you must, then you must wear proper deck shoes. Definitely no high heels.

Q: Do we need to bring towels?

A: Yes, probably best to bring a couple - not your Sunday best.

Q: How much luggage can we bring?

A: Up to you. Each cabin has a small wardrobe and a couple of drawers so dont overdo it. Bags should be of the collapsible type if they are to be stored. Otherwise you will have to share your bed with your case.

Q: Can we bring babies and granny?

A: Generally no. Sailing is an adventure sport. Not really suitable for very small children. Older people? - well Capn Dex is a grandad, but this is not a cruise. Ask if not sure.

Q: Can we use our mobile phones at sea/ashore?

A: Greek cell phone coverage is excellent. You can use mobiles both at sea and ashore. However you will need to bring a 12v car type charger that suits your phone if you need to charge it. Also remember, using mobiles abroad is expensive.

Q: How much money should we bring?

A: An impossible question to answer, but remember food and drink are not included. Eating out is generally reasonable, and the bigger villages have ATMs. Both Greece and Italy use euros.
